This is a mock-up of the GNOME Tweak Tool style UI but with a better layout for changing GNOME Shell themes. The mock-up was done in Glade 3(user interface designer for GTK/GNOME) and some elements GIMPed.

Notes

Select a theme via the radiobutton.

The default theme option can be ticked at any time, which will put the shell theme back to the default one.

Install new theme allows you to install a new GNOME Shell theme which then adds it the top of the theme list.

Now, that's more like it. I'm sure that in a year all these ideas for extra tweaking tools will be a lot more comprehensive, as we see which extensions become most popular. I definitely think there's a lot of potential for an official tool to be built into the options for all of this. Anyway, I like the mock-up, and I hope it ends up like this.

I think this has merit - especially the part about moving themes into their own top-level category. Would you mind filing a bug on bugzilla?

Yes, I'll put a bug report in with this mock-up.

I think it should be similar to the background selector. In fact I think background, gnome-shell and gtk+ selector should be integrated in a same tool in the Control Center, and every option in standalone tabs. The gnome-shell and gtk+ would have a realtime preview option, as the background changer.

I don't think it would work very well unless the thumbnails where bigger. You'd have to identify elements of the theme in a small thumbnail. I could make a special preview of the theme but they'd all need to be like that.
