I cannot remember but it isn't quick because it's an intensive vector image. Yep the hair really was a killer and it was all pretty much an experiment.
tell me, how do you get around the clumsy layering system in inkscape? and filters? you mean you blur using the colour palette, or you apply the filter from the filters menu and play with it? i didn't get around to play with those filters, but i do believe inkscape beats any vector software on the planet.
I don't use layers much and not in this. I use the bezier tool to make the shading and then blur each shading object so that it blends into each other.
I used a reference image and traced the approximate shading areas with the bezier tool and then added blur. The down side is that blur is very slow, so I had to mostly work in no filter mode.
